According to the American Society of Landscape Architects, one of the biggest trends in 2014 for backyard living is lighting. In fact, their survey found that of 98.3% of landscape architects consider lighting to be in high demand this year!
This makes sense considering lights can create an ambience that no other decorative item can. It’s hard to make an outdoor dining table look welcoming without a well-picked product to light up the area. So it’s important you invest some thought and time into picking ones that will make your backyard living experience memorable.
For starters, make sure all your pathways and garden areas are well-lit. It’s not only dangerous to have dark walking areas, but it also doesn’t make your backyard space very comforting or attractive. The more you look at pathway lighting options, the more you’ll see you have a lot of ideas to choose from. For example, nowadays you can invest in lights that are low-voltage to save on energy without losing out on lighting quality. Our partner Creative Environments carries a line from Kichler they can install for you.
Second, pay attention to your entertainment areas. These are the areas you’ll be spending most of your time in, so choose backyard lighting options you know you’ll love for a while. You could consider putting candles in mason jars on top of flat surfaces, and buy an eye-catching lamp or overhead chandelier for more enclosed areas like gazebos. And don’t forget the value of string lights; these are party favorites and make your space look cheerful and inviting! We have a selection of commercial-grade bistro lights at our showroom that come with a standard bulb or a vintage-style Edison bulb.
Finally, make sure you have sufficient lighting around your spa or hot tub area. You can use garden or pathway lighting around the space itself, but consider installing dimmable lights if your spa has some sort of roof or overhang above it, like a pergola or arch. You can adjust the level of brightness depending on how you’re using your spa, either for a party or for a relaxing evening.
Setting the mood outdoors is a breeze when you pay attention to backyard lighting schemes. And now that lighting’s a popular trend this year, you’re sure to find plenty of options to make your backyard space uniquely yours!
